DBT clients usually meet individually with their therapist one to two times per week for 45-minute sessions. Each client works on a personalized plan to reduce the behaviors that get in the way of their goals and to increase use of skillful behaviors. Individual clients are also encouraged to call their therapist for skills coaching during the week for guidance in application of skills to specific situations.
DBT skills groups consist of 4-8 group members and meet once a week for 75 minutes. The groups teach members skills based on the four modules of DBT (Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance) and, through reviewing homework assignments, provide opportunities to discuss practice of the skills. Individuals participating in a DBT skills group are asked to be in concurrent individual psychotherapy.
Dr. Traylor also leads a DBT consultation team, South Florida DBT Network, which provides supervision, support, and consultation for DBT clinicians. A consultation team is a crucial component of DBT and ensures adherance to the model and the provision of effective and competent treatment. DBT without therapist participation in a consultation team is not considered to be meeting the requirements of the treatment.
